LDP approves proposal to ban political activities funds

The Liberal Democratic Party approved a proposal Thursday to abolish the practice of disbursing funds for political activities — criticized for a lack of transparency — by revising the political funds control law.

The party aims to pass a bill to amend the legislation by the end of the year in an extraordinary session of parliament, set to convene from Thursday, after discussions with opposition parties.

“We received a lot of criticism from the people in the Lower House election. It is vital for our party to lead discussions. I want to fulfill the role of a responsible party,” Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who is also LDP president, said at the beginning of a meeting to discuss proposed amendments to the law.
