Chinese court to announce verdict in veteran journalist spy case-media group

A Beijing court is expected to announce a verdict on Friday in the case of a veteran Chinese state-media journalist who was detained on espionage charges after meeting with a Japanese diplomat in 2022, according to a U.S.-based journalists‘ organization advocating for his release.

Former Guangming Daily editor and journalist Dong Yuyu, 62, was detained by police in Beijing in February 2022 while having lunch with a Japanese diplomat, according to a statement from the U.S. National Press Club.

Beijing’s Public Security Bureau did not respond to a faxed request seeking comment.
