LDP eyes larger tax breaks for individual political donations

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is considering expanding tax breaks for individual political donations, people familiar with the matter said Thursday.

The move is designed to lower the share of political donations from companies and organizations, which have been subject to public criticism.

Currently, individuals are allowed to deduct 30% of their political donations from their income tax payments. The LDP is considering raising the deductible amount.

The LDP, while being reluctant to ban political donations from companies and organizations, is considering lowering the maximum allowable annual amount of such donations.

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and other opposition parties are demanding an all-out ban on political donations from companies and organizations.
