A train and a car collided at a railroad crossing on the Moka Railway in Moka, Tochigi Prefecture, on Saturday, leaving the elderly driver of the car dead, according to NHK.
The collision occurred at around 2 p.m. at a railway crossing between Kita-Moka Station and Nishitai Station on the Moka Line, the public broadcaster said. The train was bound for Shimodate Station when it hit the car.
According to police, the woman in her 80s who was driving the car was transported to hospital in a critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.
All 29 passengers on the single-car train were unharmed. Moka Railway has arranged bus transport for the passengers.
The site of the accident is surrounded with rice fields, offering good visibility. Police investigations remain ongoing.
The railway company has suspended operations on all sections of the line, and it is unclear when operations will be resumed.
